To salt or not to salt

Question: I have type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.  Some one suggested I try “Original No Salt” which is Sodium-free instead of salt.  Is it a safe alternative for my use?

Answer: The majority of sodium free salt products replace the sodium chloride with potassium chloride. I would talk to your doctor about your potassium levels to see if they are normal before trying this product. If so, then moderation is also key for these products. Besides the sodium-free salt products, there are many sodium free seasoning alternatives out there in the market. Mrs. Dash is a very popular seasoning alternative, especially in the clinical setting. You can find this at any drugstore or even Wal-Mart.
